Virus-like particles (VLPs) are nanoscale particles that resemble viruses but lack viral genetic material, making them non-infectious and safer for production. VLPs self-assemble from viral capsid proteins and can display membrane proteins in their natural conformation, making them suitable for immunization and antibody screening.

VLPs have various applications, including therapeutic and imaging agents. They can deliver genes or therapeutics to target cancer cells and have potential for tumor imaging. VLPs are also valuable in vaccine development, as they present viral surface proteins that elicit strong immune responses. FDA-approved vaccines for Hepatitis B and human papillomavirus are based on VLPs. VLP-based vaccines against other diseases, including malaria and chikungunya virus, are under development. VLP vaccines have shown promise in providing protection against influenza and are being explored for COVID-19.

VLPs have also been utilized in bio-inspired material synthesis, mimicking the compartmentalization seen in nature to create functional nanomaterials. Furthermore, lipoparticles, a type of VLP, have been developed to study integral membrane proteins. They provide a stable platform for incorporating membrane proteins, enabling applications such as antibody screening, immunogen production, and ligand binding assays.

In summary, VLPs offer a versatile and safe platform for various applications, including targeted drug research, vaccine development, bio-inspired material synthesis, and the study of integral membrane proteins. Their ability to display membrane proteins in their natural conformation makes them particularly valuable in immunization and antibody screening.
