The heart is a vital organ essential for human life. Given its critical role, a human-relevant model of the heart is indispensable in drug discovery—both for evaluating therapeutic efficacy against cardiac diseases and assessing the risk of cardiac toxicity. However, traditional animal models and conventional ion-channel assays often fail to fully replicate human cardiac physiology, limiting their predictive power in drug discovery. To overcome these challenges, FUJIFILM offers innovative assays using hiPSC-derived cardiomyocytes, which closely recapitulate key phenotypes of human heart cells.

Our platform features a non-invasive multielectrode array (MEA) system that captures electrophysiological properties, enabling high-throughput assessment of QT prolongation and proarrhythmia risks optimized for drug screening phases. This technology also allows detection of chronic drug effects, accelerating safer and more efficient drug development.

In this webinar, we will introduce innovative approaches to extract deeper insights from assays, including detailed evaluation of compound effects on cardiomyocyte electrophysiology such as specific ion-channel inhibition, beat rate, conduction velocity, and contractility.

Hayato Miyoshi is a Senior Scientist at FUJIFILM, leading the Assay Innovation Group focused on hiPSC-derived cardiomyocytes. He specializes in safety pharmacology and cell-based assay development. Since 2016, he has developed various models including organ-on-a-chip and neural systems. In 2023, his team started offering CRO services using their expertise in cell assays and iPSC technology.
