Syncope is a common presentation in clinical practice but it continues to present diagnostic and management problems. While continuous blood pressure monitoring delivers better test results, and therefore better treatment, some clinicians still use non-continuous blood pressure monitoring during autonomic testing. Important advances in cardiovascular diagnostics have allowed for better understanding of syncope pathophysiology. Recent international consensus on syncope and cardiovascular autonomic testing has emphasized the role of two main pathways in syncope investigation: the cardiac pathway consisting of standard cardiac tests and prolonged ECG monitoring, and the autonomic pathway consisting of a battery of cardiovascular autonomic tests.
