Learning Series 2023

The Learning Series, in partnership with ADInstruments, was a 4-episode webinar series exploring how educators are using technology to enhance teaching in the life sciences, from promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the chemistry lab to navigating the shift from pandemic-era online instruction back to in-person and active learning environments. Speakers including Kaitlynn Arnholt, Dr. Elaine Nam, Dr. Gethin Evans, Dr. Jana Kusch, Marc Demolder, and Dr. Patricia Halpin shared firsthand experience with platforms like Lt and Go Direct Sensors, along with lessons on flipped teaching, asynchronous course delivery, and student engagement. Collectively, the series highlighted how thoughtful technology adoption, grounded in student outcomes and inclusive design, is reshaping physiology and chemistry education across institutions in the US and Europe.

Drawing on Kusch's biophysics research and physiology teaching in Germany and Demolder's work running an imaging core facility and managing practical laboratories in Belgium, they discuss which technologies worked, which did not, and what they learned along the way, while also exploring the student perspective on how technology can enhance learning. She discusses how the COVID-19 pandemic pushed her third- and fourth-year clinical pathophysiology course fully online, and how a focus on clinical cases, connecting coursework to students' career goals, and incorporating low-stakes quizzing produced strong outcomes, with 72.7% of students rating the Lt online learning platform effective for mastering course material.
